For the past few years, I have been observing and documenting my neighborhood’s geometry through quilting—how the water tower appears flat against the blue horizon, buildings vanish into the fog, and power lines frame the sky. As a printmaker, I appreciate the methodical and contemplative process of making quilts and the way it lends itself to straight lines and simple shapes. In my work, I explore how the soft tactile quality of fabrics contrast with the geometric lines of buildings and power lines. I begin each work with a drawing—I scale and outline it, modifying the piecing as I go. Piecing a quilt is like solving a puzzle: placing fine details next to large expanses of solid fabric. Once the composition is resolved, I quilt, either by hand or with a machine, to emphasize the image’s geometry.
