I am taking a walk when I see something that speaks to me, and asks to be photographed. Slowing down, I take the time to notice and give my full attention. Revealing what is right in front of me, I transform ubiquitous subjects that are often ignored and overlooked. The images are a record of a fleeting moment, a spontaneous formation, a surprising gesture. Inspired by Wabi Sabi, a philosophy and aesthetic that stems from Japanese Buddhism, my art celebrates a quiet and humble state of being, one that is very human. In a society obsessed with wealth and fame, embracing the ordinary is a political act.
#dailybeautyintheageofcoronavirus was born out of the first 100 days of shelter-in-place in my neighborhood, the Mission District in San Francisco, from March 17th to June 24th, 2020. A daily ritual of walking and photographing culminated in a practice of care and appreciation. Utilizing Instagram as an exhibition platform, I showcased my favorite images each day following the photo session. I loved the challenge of not knowing what I would find on each walk, and how viewers would look forward to each posting.
#dailybeautyintheageofcoronavirus is an invitation to observe and cherish the unseen beauty of your surroundings.
